Upon returning to Ibrox, Steven Gerrard described (via the Daily Record) Kyle Lafferty as a ‘Rangers nut’ and predicted he’d be vital for the club he made over 100 appearances for between 2008 and 2012. Well, just 12 months on from his signing he could be set to leave for the Middle East as per Sunday Life [Print edition 30/06/2019, back page], via Rangers News UK.
According to the report, no specific outfits have been named but it’s said that there are a number of clubs in both Qatar and Saudi Arabia weighing up a move for the 31-year-old striker who only made his £500,000 move from Hearts to Rangers last summer, as per The Evening Times.
Lafferty struggled a lot for regular game time last season. In his 27 appearances for the Glasgow giants, only seven of them came as starts, with the remaining 20 being from the bench. With that being the case, it’s perhaps of little surprise that he only managed to find the net five times per BBC Sport.
Jermain Defoe obviously arrived in January and Alfredo Morelos was the Light Blues’ main source of goals last season, bagging 20, and (according to FootyStats) the club scored a goal every 42 minutes last season, so the firepower isn’t an issue. Yes, Lafferty contributed to that, but with attacking arrivals in the likes of Greg Stewart, Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones this summer, it’s not hard to suggest he is somewhat disposable.
After a disappointing return to Ibrox, Steven Gerrard reportedly told Lafferty back in late May, as per Football Scotland, that he had no future at the club beyond this summer, which is where these new links to the Middle East come in.
We’ve seen previously in Lafferty’s career that he’s not afraid to leave the UK to play his football. After his Rangers exit in 2012, the player left for Sion in Switzerland and from there he moved on to sign for Palermo in Italy, so moving abroad clearly doesn’t bother the Northern Irishman. Indeed, having also turned out for Turkish side Çaykur Rizespor while on loan from Norwich in 2015, Transfermarkt total his career appearances for clubs away from these shores at 79 out of 435.
Somewhat of a journeyman, another foreign land of football could soon be ticked off of his list, it seems.
