Rangers veterans Steven Davis and Allan McGregor have been lauded by their former Ibrox team-mate Madjid Bougherra, who feels that they will both have a “vital” part to play if the club are to achieve success this season.
The Northern Ireland midfielder and Scotland goalkeeper, who are 35 and 37 respectively, both played alongside Bougherra at Rangers during the Algerian’s spell at the club between 2008 and 2011 and he thinks their presence in the dressing room could be invaluable to Steven Gerrard’s current outfit in the Premiership title race, with the ‘Gers two points behind Celtic with a game in hand as they chase a first title in nine years.
He told the Daily Record: “It’s also important he has players such as Steven and Allan to call upon. They will be vital to the success of the club because they have the experience and they can manage the other players around them. Steven is having a very good season and Greegsy is Greegsy, a player with so much experience around the big games. They are important.
“When I was at Rangers, it was David Weir who helped me when I first arrived. He was a very important player in the dressing room and so was Lee McCulloch. They really took the squad under control and every team needs players like that.”
Bougherra’s belief that Davis and McGregor will be key players in Rangers’ bid to end their Premiership title drought is understandable, given the duo’s previous in this regard and their performances this season. They were both in the ‘Gers team that last won the league in 2011 and that title-winning experience could be valuable to a squad with no other survivors from the previous triumph nine years ago.
Also, rather than simply being kept around for experience, both men have been featuring regularly for the club this season. Davis has started 12 league games and five in the Europa League group stage, with a goal and two assists from those competitions. Also, he has won more tackles (2.6) and played more passes (55.6) per game than anyone else in the squad, while his 83.8% passing success rate is the fifth highest at Ibrox, as per WhoScored.
McGregor has been a solid last line of defence for Rangers this term, starting 17 of their 19 Premiership games and all six Europa League group matches (as per TransferMarkt). He has conceded just 10 goals in the league, a concession rate of 0.59 per game helping the ‘Gers to have the best defensive record in the division, while he made 14 saves in their Europa League group campaign.
The two Rangers veterans have contributed plenty to what has been a promising campaign so far and one that could end up with title-winning glory, so it is not surprising that Bougherra feels that they may well be crucial to the Light Blues’ chances of silverware this season.
