Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has already worked quickly to bring in Joe Aribo from Charlton (BBC) and George Edmundson from Oldham (BBC) and the Birmingham Live are still touting the Gers with a loan move for the Liverpool winger Ryan Kent.
The Bluenoses enjoyed the 2018/19 season with Kent as the player bagged himself six goals and six assists in the Scottish Premiership as he helped his temporary side to finish nine points behind Celtic, the joint closest that anyone has come to the Hoops in their current eight in a row streak of titles.
According to the Birmingham Mail, the player would rather have a permanent move than being loaned out every season, although Rangers are unable to stump up the required £12m fee.
Still, it has to be said that Kent would make a superb option at Rangers should he join for another year. The winger proved what he was all about when he was named as the Young Player of the Year in the Scottish Premiership (BBC), after all.
While Kent is said to favour a permanent move away, he did tell the Scottish Sun back in May that he felt settled in Glasgow and would be open to joining the club. Clearly, the £12m fee already mentioned appears to be an issue, though there does seem to be a connection between the player and the club, so perhaps the idea of another loan move wouldn’t fall on completely deaf ears.
The future of the winger is very uncertain. Indeed, Middlesbrough, under new manager Jonathan Woodgate and Leeds United have all been mentioned in the report regarding the player. However, it’s believed that Leeds have hit a wall in their negotiations whilst Birmingham Live in their report mention that Aston Villa aren’t interested despite speculation.
Regardless of the interest for the Liverpool man south of the border, Gerrard could do with his presence next season. His current wide options at Ibrox are Jamie Murphy, who spent most of last season injured, Eros Grezda and Glenn Middleton.
That trio only managed to contribute nine goals to Gerrard’s Scottish Premiership campaign, despite the fact they made a combined 61 appearances between them. In comparison, Kent’s six strikes in 27 look much healthier and, given his end product, he should be a key target for Gerrard.
Kent’s come in for a lot of plaudits in the past, and whilst he may not be in Jurgen Klopp’s plans at the moment, the Liverpool manager has lavished praise on the 22-year-old previously.
The German gaffer labelled Kent a ‘fantastic footballer’ when talking about his on-loan star back in January, via The Scottish Sun, and given how well he played last season, it would be an excellent move as Rangers plot an assault on the title.
