Martin Skrtel appears to be all set to join Rangers this summer, according to a report from Milliyet.
The former Fenerbahce defender is believed to have been unable to reach an agreement with the Turkish outfit regarding a new deal and is now thought to be set to team up with Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.
The Light Blues boss, who was once a team-mate of Skrtel’s at Liverpool, is said to have been insistent on the transfer and it appears he could be about to have a reunion with his former colleague.
Although he may be hugely experienced and have plenty to offer to Rangers, the arrival of Skrtel is certainly one that could raise a few eyebrows at Ibrox for a number of different reasons.
The 34-year-old may have had a solid year for Fenerbahce in what was a difficult campaign for the club in the Super Lig last season – as he managed to record an average of 1.2 tackles and 1.1 interceptions in his 27 top-flight appearances (WhoScored) – and showed that he still has the ability to perform at a decent level despite his age, however it would be difficult to see exactly where the Slovakian enforcer would fit into the team moving forward.
The likes of George Edmundson and Filip Helander have both arrived and will provide both Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic with competition. Adding a fifth centre-back might provide them with added strength and depth, but accommodating all of them will surely be a tough ask.
There could be an argument that his experience could come into play as he is a lot older than the current options Gerrard has at his disposal, whilst he could be the man to help the manager turn his defence into a solid backline after slamming them on occasions last season for being ‘sloppy’ (The Scottish Sun).
However, finances must also be something that is questioned when it comes to Skrtel as well, as he already turned down an offer from Fenerbahce because it did not meet his demands, as he was on a £60,000-a-week contract (Daily Record) before it expired.
A deal for Skrtel to come to Rangers and play his football at Ibrox looks set to finally happen a year after the links started to emerge regarding a possible switch – The Scottish Sun claimed back in May 2018 that a deal had almost been completed.
However, it is an interesting one considering the transfers that have already taken place in regards to the defence this summer as it would be difficult to see what Gerrard looks to do with the options he already has available.
Should Skrtel arrive, it will be intriguing to see what role he is handed moving forward.
