According to a recent report from The Sun, Jermain Defoe could be set for a move away in the January transfer window. The 36-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League side Bournemouth and has done so since leaving Sunderland in 2017, although a lack of regular game time this season has plunged his future at the Vitality Stadium into doubt.
And reports suggest that the likes of Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, and Wigan Athletic are keen on the Englishman, as should Rangers manager Steven Gerrard as he seeks to ease the burden on striker Alfredo Morelos.
Ultimately, 22-year-old Morelos has been one of the biggest stars in the Gers’ season so far with a staggering 17 goals and ten assists to his name in all competitions, meaning that he is only one goal behind his tally from the entirety of last season, his first at Ibrox.
And with nine of those goals coming in the Scottish Premiership, it’s pretty clear that the Colombia international will play a vital part in what success Gerrard’s men have in the league this term.
But with the next top-scoring striker being Kyle Lafferty with just four goals to his name in all competitions, three in the league, the Light Blues do appear to be overly reliant on Morelos’ goals to get them through the season – and given his disciplinary issues, that reliance is likely to come back to haunt the Gers as the campaign wears on.
Thus, Gerrard must seek to add to his striking department in a bid to provide fresh competition to Morelos but to also take the weight off his shoulders – Defoe is absolutely the man to do just that.
The Englishman, capped 57 times by his country over the years, has proven to be one of the best strikers in the Premier League during his career with an impressive 163 goals in 496 games in the English top-flight, turning in prolific numbers at pretty much every club he has been at.
And with 20 goals for England at international level, where he would have spent much time with Gerrard down the years, it’s clear that the 36-year-old possesses the sort of goal-scoring instincts needed to seriously aid in Rangers’ title quest – add in vast amounts of experience, and he could prove to be a big asset to Gerrard going forward.
Significantly, his arrival would help Morelos in more ways than one, not only in terms of somewhat easing the burden on the 22-year-old to continuously get the goals, but also given Defoe has several years of experience on the field that could benefit the Colombian as he seeks to become the best striker he can possibly be.
As such, with Defoe’s future seemingly uncertain heading into the New Year, Gerrard must seek to reunite with his former England teammate by luring him to Rangers, as doing so would go some way to easing the burden on 22-year-old Gers striker Morelos.
