Noel Whelan has suggested Alfredo Morelos needs to do better when Rangers play on the European stage if he wants to earn a big-money move away from Ibrox in the future.
The Colombia international has been linked with moves away from the Light Blues for as long as time can remember, with Football Insider having claimed Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur as just two of the latest big clubs to have taken an interest in him as recently as January.
However, the 23-year-old has struggled in the second half of the campaign for Steven Gerrard’s side and Whelan believes the South American now finds himself in a strange situation but one that he needs to ensure does not continue to happen.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I think for Morelos, it’s a strange one. Yes, you’re not getting the support, yes, you’re getting frustrated, but at the same time, people are going to be paying big money for that player, maybe, in the summer. He’s going to have to do it in Europe.
“If he can’t stamp his mark on games in these competitions, other teams will be looking at that. They want players who can be playing at the highest level.”
Indeed, the Scottish winter break does not appear to have been too kind to Morelos, with the forward misfiring and not appearing to be able to do the business for the Glaswegians when it matters most – he has just one since the turn of the year.
There is no doubt about his ability to find the back of the net as he has 77 goals in his 136 appearances for Rangers over the duration of his stay to date (per TransferMarkt), however Whelan has a point in regards to European football as he is yet to find the back of the net in the knockout stages against Braga and Bayer Leverkusen (TransferMarkt).
