Rangers really have made their stupidest transfer decision in years

Though the window slammed shut around about two weeks ago now, the Rangers fans here in the Transfer Tavern still had to deal with a worrying rumour. Indeed, after a January that saw Ibrox chiefs busy on the recruitment front, the fact that Alfredo Morelos was linked with a big-money move to China was a worry.

The Colombian has blown hot and cold since his arrival from HJK Helsinki over the course of the summer, though has largely impressed as a raw talent who can bag all types goals. Clearly still learning, the 21-year-old could be a big player in the future, though the fact that Rangers reportedly snubbed an £8m offer is rather stupid.

Indeed, their emphatic statement that Morelos would not be sold as the club look to build for a long-term assault on Celtic’s domestic dominance is an admirable one, though not a financially sound piece of business. The idea of making such a profit on a man they reportedly shelled out just £1m for a few months prior should have been music to the ears of those behind the scenes at Ibrox.

There’s no guarantee that Morelos ever prove himself to be worthy of such a big bid again and, with the style of football having changed considerably since his arrival only a few months ago, nobody knows what next season will hold for both he and the club.

Rangers’ recent history has been littered with stupid transfer mistakes and this could prove to be another.
