Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has been advised not to swap a Scottish Premiership title challenge at Ibrox for a relegation battle in the English Premier League.
A caller to the BBC Five Live 606 phone-in suggested that English top flight strugglers Bournemouth should try to bring the 23-year-old to the Vitality Stadium as well as recalling Jermain Defoe from his loan spell at the ‘Gers, with co-host Robbie Savage giving short shift to the thought of Morelos joining the Cherries.
Speaking on BBC Five Live 606 [via Daily Record], Savage responded: “Morelos is not going to go to Bournemouth, is he? Come on. Me and Chris Sutton always argue about (Odsonne) Edouard or Morelos. I know he’s not scored against Celtic but his goals for Rangers have been unbelievable, scored in the Europa League as you rightly say.
“But Morelos, if he leaves Rangers, personally I think he’s better than Bournemouth. I don’t think you leave Rangers to go to Bournemouth in the predicament they’re in. Obviously there’s the financial side, who knows what Bournemouth could pay? (It’s) Premier League wages. But I don’t think if you’re Morelos you go to Bournemouth.
“I think you hold out, stay at Rangers. If I was Morelos, would I rather play for Rangers in a title fight against Celtic or go to a relegation battle with Bournemouth but probably be on more money? For this season I’d probably say at Rangers.”
Savage makes some good points in dismissing the thought of Morelos potentially joining Bournemouth in the January transfer window. As he mentioned, he is currently at the coalface of a tightly-contested Premiership title battle, with the ‘Gers just two points behind Celtic with a game in hand. By contrast, Eddie Howe’s Cherries are second from bottom in the Premier League after losing nine of their last 11 games in the division.
Also, as Savage pointed out, Morelos has made his mark in European competition. He found the net six times for Rangers in as many Europa League group games, making him the top scorer for the tournament so far. The 23-year-old has proven capable of netting regularly on the continent, so if he were to leave Ibrox in a supposed upward move, it would need to be for a club competing on the European stage and not one like Bournemouth that’s gripped in a relegation scrap.
Another key factor which should persuade Morelos to stay at Rangers is the firm backing that he has received from manager Steven Gerrard, who spoke out strongly in defence of the Colombian (as per Daily Record) following criticism of his temperament from the likes of Sutton (as per @chris_sutton73 on Twitter).
With all those points taken into account, it’s not surprising that Savage has poured cold water on the notion of Morelos swapping Rangers for Bournemouth.
