Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers are interested in signing Bolton Wanderers’ Ronan Darcy in January, according to a report from Football Insider.
The Glasgow club are thought to have joined a number of English sides in expressing an interest in the young striker, who is just 18-years-old.
Darcy is a youth academy product at Bolton and made his first-team debut at the end of last season, coming on as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest.
Following their relegation to League One and a severe lack of players at the start of the season, Darcy and several other youngsters were given the opportunity to play for the first team.
He has grasped that chance with both hands and has so far started four times in the league for the Trotters, whilst also making two substitute appearances. He has also appeared in a League Cup tie against Rochdale, in which he scored his first professional goal (via Transfermarkt).
According to Football Insider, Rangers are thought to have been scouting the youngster throughout the campaign as they look for fresh talent ahead of the winter transfer window.
However, they could face competition for the highly-rated striker’s signature. Premier League outfit Leicester City are also thought to be interested in him, and they too have been watching his progress this term.
It would be a big step up for Darcy to move to a huge club like Rangers at such a young age, but it is likely that he would be signed as one for the future as opposed to someone who will be thrown straight into the first team.
In Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe, the Gers already have two top quality goalscorers and it is unlikely that Darcy will break into the team ahead of them given their prolific output this season.
However, from a point of view of investing in youth, this move would make sense for Rangers. They could quite easily take the player and loan him out straight away, which would ensure he continues to get minutes and develop.
Given Bolton’s financial struggles, it is unlikely that a deal would break the bank. So signing a highly rated young player at a potentially low price could prove to be decent business from the Glaswegians.
Will Alfredo Morelos finish the season a Rangers player?
