Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the rest of the summer transfer window, what with new boss Steven Gerrard already having made some shrewd additions to his squad.
The 38-year-old was confirmed to be the club’s new manager earlier this month following the departure of Graeme Murty, and he has already set about moulding a squad he hopes can challenge champions Celtic in the Scottish Premiership next season. Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield have both joined on free transfers, while on-loan star Jamie Murphy has been rewarded for his efforts in the second half of the campaign with a permanent deal with the Gers.
As such, there are many optimistic and excited Light Blues supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking Liverpool with moves for goalkeepers Alisson, Jasper Cillessen, and Thibaut Courtois.
And that’s because these reports should prompt Rangers into making a move for the Reds’ £9 million-rated star Simon Mignolet (as per Transfermarkt), who looks set to suffer from any goalkeeping arrival this summer.
Ultimately, the 30-year-old has endured a testing time at Anfield since his move from Sunderland back in 2013, with the Belgium international often the number one choice at the Merseyside giants, but not always entirely convincing.
In fact, manager Jurgen Klopp has placed his faith in Loris Karius ever since the turn of the year to leave Mignolet firmly rooted to the substitute’s bench, leaving him very vulnerable were another shot-stopper to arrive at the club this summer.
And following Karius’ shocker in the Champions League final last weekend, a new goalkeeper appears likely at Anfield, and Rangers must thus seek to capitalise by moving for outcast Mignolet.
Reports in the last few months have suggested that current Gers number one Wes Foderingham could be on his way out of Ibrox this summer, which would leave Gerrard short in the goalkeeping department ahead of the 2018/19 campaign, despite the arrival of McGregor.
And while Mignolet has been guilty of errors in the last few years, he remains a hugely adept goalkeeper at Premier League level, as evidenced during his time at Liverpool but also his three-year stint at Sunderland, in which time he kept 33 clean sheets in 101 appearances, and won their Player of the Year award back in 2013.
Thus, while it may appear that the 30-year-old is a liability between the sticks, he is in fact a solid goalkeeper and one that Gerrard could easily rely on at Rangers, at the same time offering the Belgian ace the opportunity to get his career going again given that appears unlikely to happen at Liverpool.
As such, with the Reds heavily linked with a new goalkeeper, Rangers must capitalise by making a summer move for Mignolet.
