Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the remainder of the summer transfer window, what with new manager Steven Gerrard already having made some shrewd additions since taking over at Ibrox.
The 38-year-old was confirmed to be Graeme Murty’s successor last month and took over on June 1, although before then had already been busy moulding and shaping a squad he hopes can challenge Celtic next season. The experienced duo of Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield have both joined the Gers on free transfers, while on-loan star Jamie Murphy has made his move permanent after an impressive spell north of the border.
As such, there are many excited Rangers fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking Southampton with a move for Stoke City winger Xherdan Shaqiri.
And that’s because a move for the Switzerland international could plunge Nathan Redmond’s future at St Mary’s into doubt, which is why Gerrard’s Light Blues must capitalise on these reports by making an ambitious move for the £16.2 million-rated England international (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the 24-year-old endured a testing campaign with the South Coast outfit in netting just once and laying on only three assists for Mark Hughes’ side, with his struggles alongside the other difficulties of the club’s attackers contributing greatly to their battle against relegation.
Clearly, there is a very good player in Redmond given he earned a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad last year, but Saints fans simply haven’t seen any of that this season, and as such his place in the team could be under serious threat were their club to indeed land Shaqiri.
And with first team football then very much in doubt at Southampton, Gerrard’s Rangers must seek to pounce by luring him north of the border to Ibrox.
While the Liverpool legend has made some very shrewd signings so far, one senses that the Gers are still missing that genuine quality to really bridge the gap to Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic next season – Redmond could provide that spark.
Only last season did the former Norwich City winger score seven times to help Claude Puel’s Saints finish eighth in the Premier League, while his difficulties this season haven’t been through the lack of trying given he created 41 chances for Southampton – only Dusan Tadic (53) created more.
Thus, it appears that the 24-year-old isn’t far away from re-discovering his best form, but given Hughes worked with Shaqiri during his reign as Stoke City manager in the last few years, alongside the Swiss star’s immense talent, Redmond may struggle for regular football were they to land the 26-year-old.
And with Gerrard likely eyeing up that star quality to reel Celtic in next season, the 38-year-old must seek to capitalise by making an ambitious move for Redmond during the close season.
