Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern are optimistic about their chances for next season after the club revealed that former England captain Steven Gerrard would arrive over the course of the summer to try and restore former glories at Ibrox.
The Liverpool legend was finally announced as Graeme Murty’s successor earlier this month and is set to take over at the end of the season. Clearly, Gerrard has a massive task on his hands if he is to knock Celtic and former boss Brendan Rodgers off their perch, though excitement is palpable amongst our local Light Blues.
Summer will be a critical period for the club as Gerrard looks to overhaul his squad and build a team capable of challenging for the title. His arrival has seen a number of former team-mates linked with a move to Scotland including Fernando Torres and Wayne Rooney.
However, instead, he should target Bournemouth striker – Jermain Defoe. Valued at £3.1m by Transfermarkt, the 35-year-old has netted just four Premier League goals this season as he approaches the end of his career. The Scottish Premiership could be the perfect place for the former Tottenham forward to see out his final days as a pro.
Defoe is one of the best goal scorers the Premier League has ever seen, netting 162 goals in 491 appearances. Gerrard will be well aware of his talents and the dangers he would pose to Scottish defences.
Potentially available on the cheap, the former England international could prove to be a shrewd piece of business by the Gers.
