Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the new era at their football club following the appointment of Steven Gerrard as the new Gers manager last month.
The Liverpool legend was confirmed as Graeme Murty’s successor back in May to take over as of June 1, yet the ex-midfielder was busy prior to his start date in beginning to shape and mould a squad capable of challenging Scottish Premiership champions Celtic. Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield have both joined the Light Blues on free transfers, while Jamie Murphy has turned his loan move into a permanent one after an impressive spell at Ibrox.
Thus, there are many excited Rangers fans in the Tavern at present, with several hoping for more additions between now and August to transform the squad from one that finished third to one that can compete with Brendan Rodgers’ dominant Bhoys.
And one man many of those Gers fans lining up at the bar are hoping their side can land this summer is Leeds United defender Tom Pearce, as his addition would give first-choice left back Declan John something to think about heading into the new season.
Ultimately, former Cardiff City defender John completed a permanent move to Ibrox back in December after initially joining the club on loan a few months earlier, with his consistently high-level efforts earning many plaudits from those Light Blues fans in the Tavern.
The 22-year-old appeared 31 times for the Gers last season to suggest that he has usurped Lee Wallace in the left back pecking order, and with the 30-year-old currently suspended by the club, it remains to be seen what future he has at Ibrox.
And with John having suffered a knee injury at the rear end of the campaign, it also remains to be seen how well he recovers after injury, which is why a move for Leeds’ Pearce, who has burst onto the scene in recent months, is needed to give him much-needed competition for the left back spot.
The 20-year-old only made his senior debut for the Yorkshire giants back in March of this year in a Championship clash against Sheffield Wednesday, yet he started their final four matches of the campaign to suggest that he is now a key member of the squad at Elland Road.
However, the England Under-21 international is out of contract this summer and, as of yet, has not penned a new deal with the second tier outfit, which is why Rangers should be ready to pounce.
The 20-year-old has clearly got great quality and appears to have a big future in the game if his first few games at Leeds are anything to go by, and to have a youngster in the form of Pearce battling another young player in John for the left back spot at Rangers can only be good for both men in their quest to fulfil their potential.
As such, Gerrard should seriously consider making a summer move for the Leeds starlet, as doing so would provide the sort of competition which would give John something to think about heading into the new season.
