Rangers should seriously consider taking a summer punt on struggling £9m-rated striking star

Rangers supporters have been pretty satisfied in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side draw 1-1 with Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Tuesday night to keep their hopes of finishing second alive heading into the final game of the season.

The Gers, who last week confirmed that Steven Gerrard will take over as manager next time round, went into their clash at Pittodrie off the back of a 1-0 win over Kilmarnock on Saturday, thus moving to within a point of Derek McInnes’ Dons. Yet it was the hosts who took the lead on Tuesday night through Kenny McLean, only for the Light Blues to hit back in the second period through Ross McCrorie to preserve a point from the encounter, and thus take the battle for second place down to the final day.

And with Rangers travelling to Hibernian and Aberdeen away to champions Celtic this weekend, many of our resident Gers supporters are confident that their team can indeed clinch the runners-up spot behind their Old Firm rivals.

Yet some of those Light Blues supporters lining up at the bar are already thinking about the summer window and what business their side may conduct, with many of the opinion that their side should take a punt on struggling £9 million-rated Stoke City striker Saido Berahino (as per Transfermarkt).

Ultimately, the 24-year-old has endured a miserable time at the bet365 Stadium since his move there from West Brom back in 2017, with the forward having appeared 30 times for the Potters, but having yet to net a single goal for the Staffordshire-based outfit.

It’s clear that the Englishman is struggling for confidence on the field, but with Stoke having lost their Premier League status this week, Berahino could well be on the lookout for a move to reinvigorate a career that promised so much a matter of years ago.

And with Stoke reportedly willing to sanction his departure this summer, reportedly on loan, Gerrard’s Rangers should seek to take a punt on the 24-year-old.

Ultimately, it wasn’t too long ago that Berahino was being tipped for big things for both club and country, with the striker impressing greatly at West Brom back in the 2014/15 season in netting 20 goals in 45 appearances for the Baggies.

And with nine goals in the campaign before and seven the season after, the 24-year-old was being linked with big moves away from the Hawthorns, while some were even tipping him for a senior England call-up to add to the many he made a youth level.

Thus, there is clearly a very clinical, prolific, and ultimately adept striker in Berahino, but the baggage that has accumulated during his time at Stoke in failing to net will certainly be weighing him down – he needs a move away to restart and thus resurrect his career.

And Rangers could offer him that.

The Gers will be seeking to bridge the gap to champions Celtic next season, which means making ambitious additions over the summer to strengthen the squad in all areas. And with just two players, namely Alfredo Morelos and Josh Windass, reaching double figures this term, the forward ranks need improving.

Berahino’s arrival could do just that, and a fresh start north of the border at a huge club with huge expectations could be exactly what the 24-year-old needs to kickstart his career once again – he’s surely worth a punt this summer.
