Rangers supporters have been pretty satisfied in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team draw 1-1 with Aberdeen on Tuesday night to remain in contention for second place in the Scottish Premiership.
The Gers went into their clash at Pittodrie knowing that defeat to Derek McInnes’ side would see them clinch the runners-up spot behind champions Celtic, and they looked on course to do just that when Kenny McLean gave them an early lead from the penalty spot. However, the Light Blues salvaged a point from proceedings thanks to Ross McCrorie’s second half equaliser, thus leaving Rangers a point behind the Dons heading into the final round of fixtures.
And with the Gers visiting Hibernian and Aberdeen facing the daunting prospect of a trip to Celtic, there are many optimistic Rangers fans in the Tavern at present, with many fancying their team’s chances of leapfrogging the Dons on the final day of the campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Light Blues fans to discuss, not least recent reports linking Cardiff City with a summer move for attacker Josh Windass.
And while the £630,000-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) certainly divides opinion among Rangers fans, sanctioning his departure this summer would see the Gers lose even more ground on their Old Firm rivals before the 2018/19 season has even started.
Ultimately, the Light Blues will finish at least 13 points adrift of their bitter rivals in the Scottish Premiership this term, and while some fans will point to that gap being smaller than last season, the gulf in class between the two teams has been evident in their most recent meetings, with the Bhoys winning 4-0 and 5-0 in recent weeks.
And with Brendan Rodgers’ side only likely to get stronger over the summer in a bid to make their mark in Europe next season, it’s imperative that Rangers follow suit, and that includes not being in the business of selling their best players.
And there’s little doubt that Windass is one of those.
The 24-year-old has enjoyed a wonderful season at Ibrox in netting 17 goals and laying on eight assists in 40 appearances for the Gers, with fellow attacker Alfredo Morelos the only Rangers star to have scored more (18) this time round.
Thus, regardless of whether the Englishman is well liked by the Rangers faithful, taking him out of the side in sanctioning his departure this summer would significantly weaken Steven Gerrard’s team ahead of the new season – 17 goals is a sizable chunk to replace.
Yes, there will be a buzz around the club over the summer what with Gerrard set to take over next season, but the 37-year-old will certainly want the Gers to retain their best players over the summer ready for the 2018/19 campaign – Windass is one of those.
It is already a massive task for Gerrard to bridge the gap to Rodgers’ Celtic, it would be made even harder were they to sell Windass this summer.
In fact, sanctioning the 24-year-old’s departure would see that gap grow even more before the campaign has even begun.
