Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern will be looking forward to the rest of the summer transfer window under Steven Gerrard, as the 38-year-old looks to make a number of changes to the squad he has inherited.
The former Liverpool star is keen to make an impact with the Gers as he takes his first venture into senior football management, and has already been busy working hard behind the scenes to bring in new additions this summer.
He is keen on solving a number of weak areas before the start of the Scottish Premiership season, and has identified the centre-back position as one of his main problem areas, in turn securing an agreement with one man he hopes can help in the defensive third next season.
And that’s because the club’s official website have confirmed that the Light Blues have sealed a deal to bring Nikola Katic from Slaven Belupo on a four-year deal, as Gerrard’s rebuild of the Rangers squad continues.
The one-time Croatia international will seek to improve a backline that shipped more goals than any other side that finished in the top seven of the Scottish Premiership this season, with it evident that a tighter defensive unit is needed if Gerrard’s side are to sustain a challenge to Celtic.
And given how highly-rated the £855,000-rated youngster (as per Transfermarkt) is, landing Katic could go some way to helping the Gers bridge that gap to Brendan Rodgers’ men.
Landlord’s Verdict: The defender will surely help to immediately bolster Gerrard’s backline, especially in the air as he is 6ft 4in tall, while he also is strong in the tackle and can easily lead the side if required.
Katic is arguably a low-risk signing as he has a long playing career ahead of him despite having already impressed at a senior level, but with the Gers clearly in need of defensive additions, Gerrard will be hoping that the 21-year-old can hit the ground running having now made the move to Ibrox.
