Noel Whelan has told Football Insider that Sheyi Ojo should continue his career at Glasgow Rangers rather than returning to Liverpool following the end of his loan spell at Ibrox.
The England U21 international’s spell so far north of the border has been mixed. He has managed five goals and seven assists in 36 matches in all competitions, which is not a terrible return, but he has not always been the most popular figure amongst the supporters, and he has seen his playing time reduced as the season has progressed.
Whelan, though, believes that signing permanently for Steven Gerrard’s team would be the far better choice for him. He said:
“Now he is at that stage of his career and life that he needs to have three good years at a club – make a name for himself.
“There is definite talent there but he needs to be playing regular, competitive football. He needs that fitness and belief back.
“A permanent move? That would be fantastic for him.”
Football Insider recently revealed that the Gers have no plans to sign him permanently, which would see him return to his parent club. However, as Whelan says, a full-time move to Scotland could be beneficial. Even at the age of just 22, this is already his fifth loan spell – it is so hard for any player, especially a young one, to prove his worth when he is never staying at a club for more than a year.
Would you like to sign Ojo permanently?
Ojo has never contributed more goals and assists for any side than at Ibrox. Whilst his form may have dropped off a little, there is certainly talent there, and his £10,000 a week wage would not be an impossible amount to pay whilst his transfer value is quite low too as £1.44m (via Transfermarkt). Sometimes, you need to gamble, and Steven Gerrard, who managed the youngster whilst manager of the U18s at Liverpool, could be just the man to get the best out of him long-term.
