Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been pretty satisfied in recent times after seeing their team make an encouraging start to the new era under manager Steven Gerrard.
The 38-year-old took over at Ibrox during the summer and has certainly stamped his authority on things with 11 new additions at the club, many of whom have already proven their worth to the Light Blues. The Scottish giants have won three rounds in qualifying to reach the play-off round of the Europa League, where they will face Ufa later today, while they have made an unbeaten start domestically to reach the last eight of the Scottish League Cup, and pick up four points from two games in the Scottish Premiership.
Thus, there have been many thrilled Rangers fans up and down the country in recent times, although some are concerned at the lack of squad depth in the left back position following the somewhat surprising decision to let Declan John go earlier this month.
The 23-year-old made the move to Ibrox on loan from Cardiff City back in 2017 and made his move there permanent just a few months later, eventually finishing last season with 31 appearances to his name, 26 of which coming in their run to third place in the Scottish Premiership.
And the left back earned some rave reviews for his efforts for the Light Blues last term, and while the arrival of Borna Barisic did push him down the pecking order at the start of this season, letting him leave for Swansea City was somewhat of a surprise given his efforts last time round, as well as the lack of depth in that area.
Thus, Gerrard should seek to replace John in the final few weeks of the window, what with Lee Wallace’s future far from certain, and Everton outcast Brendan Galloway, valued at £2.7 million by Transfermarkt, appears to be the ideal addition to fill that void.
The 22-year-old began his senior career at MK Dons before moving to Goodison Park back in 2014, although the left back has since managed just 21 senior appearances for the Toffees, and has failed to make the match-day squads for either of their opening two league games this term.
In fact, he has spent the last few seasons out on loan in a bid for more regular football, although they haven’t been overly forthcoming either given Galloway only mustered five appearances while at West Brom in the 2016/17 campaign, before only managing three more the season after while on loan at Championship side Sunderland.
Nonetheless, the 22-year-old clearly has potential having featured regularly for England at Under-19 level in recent times, and as such appears to be the ideal addition to Gerrard’s squad in a bid to give fellow left back Barisic competition for the first team slot.
Thus, having sold John earlier this month alongside the uncertainty surrounding Wallace’s Rangers future, Gerrard should seek to add another left back to his ranks, and he could do a lot worse than lure Everton’s Galloway to Ibrox.
