Rangers supporters have been pretty subdued in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side suffer a second successive Scottish Premiership defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Saturday.
Graeme Murty’s men went into their encounter with Killy off the back of a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Celtic in the Old Firm derby, a result which all but ended their slim title hopes. Regardless, our resident Light Blues fans were looking for a response from their team in their quest to at least seal second place in the table, but the Gers were nowhere near their best in Glasgow on Saturday and Steve Clarke’s visitors deservedly clinched the victory thanks to Kris Boyd’s strike nine minutes into the second half, thus inflicting a seventh home league loss of the campaign on Murty’s side.
As such, there have been many downbeat Rangers fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their club can indeed finish the season strongly and clinch second place in the table.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Gers supporters to discuss, not least recent reports linking them with a summer move for striker Louis Moult, whom they were linked with last summer only for no deal to materialise.
And with Kenny Miller seemingly on his way out of Ibrox this summer, the £675,000-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) could turn out to be the perfect replacement for the 38-year-old at the Scottish giants.
Ultimately, things haven’t gone well for the 25-year-old since his January move to Championship side Preston North End, with the forward mustering just seven senior appearances for Alex Neil’s team, and failing to net in any of them.
And having failed to appear in any of their last four league games, it appears that Moult is fast falling down the pecking order at Deepdale, and his struggles may well be of concern to some of our resident Rangers fans.
Crucially though, the Englishman has goal-scoring pedigree north of the border, having scored a mightily impressive 50 goals in just 98 appearances for Motherwell, in which time he also laid on 16 assists – Rangers fans will know first-hand of his capabilities having bagged in the 1-1 draw at Ibrox in April last year.
That equated to a direct contribution every 116 minutes for the Scottish Premiership side, which is a remarkably healthy scoring rate and the sort of rate that Miller has produced throughout his time at Ibrox (for what it’s worth, Miller has averaged a direct contribution every 117 minutes during his Rangers career).
And with Murty’s men hoping to bridge the gap to Celtic even further next time round, a prolific goal-scorer in the mould of Miller wouldn’t go amiss. And Moult could be the answer.
The Gers were reportedly keen on the 25-year-old last summer before ex-boss Pedro Caixinha plumped for Eduardo Herrera – they cannot make the same mistake again by missing out on the forward.
And given his difficulties at Preston in the last few months, it may well suggest that Moult’s future lies north of the border in a league in which he has certainly proven his credentials in recent times.
Thus, Rangers must get a deal done for the 25-year-old this summer, as he would be the perfect replacement for veteran striker Miller.
