Rangers supporters are surely very much looking forward to the new era at Ibrox following the appointment of Steven Gerrard as the club’s new manager back in May.

The 38-year-old was confirmed as Graeme Murty’s successor to take over officially on June 1, yet the Liverpool legend was busy prior to his start date making shrewd additions to his squad in a bid to bridge the gap to champions Celtic this time around. The likes of Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield, Connor Goldson, and Ovie Ejaria have all made the move to the Light Blues, as Gerrard seeks to rebuild and revamp the Scottish giants ahead of a possible title push this term.

As such, there are many excited and indeed expectant Gers fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are wondering who the next Liverpool youngster Gerrard could seek to bring to Ibrox, what with Ejaria already through the door, and the likes of Harry Wilson and Ben Woodburn linked with a move.

But given his efforts for the Under-18s in the UEFA Youth League last season, alongside Rangers’ need for defensive reinforcements, 19-year-old Conor Masterson is the Reds wonderkid Gerrard really ought to sign for Rangers this summer.

The centre-back is coming up through the ranks at Anfield and was a prominent feature in the Under-18 side at Anfield prior to last season, in which he became a regular in the development squad in starting ten times for the Reds in their run to second place in Premier League 2.

Yet Gerrard will know him particularly well given Masterson started all seven of the UEFA Youth League matches for the Under-18s last term, in which time the 19-year-old helped Gerrard’s side to five clean sheets in six games prior to their penalty shoot-out defeat to Manchester City in the quarterfinals.

In fact, Masterson performed so well for the club’s youth sides last term that he earned a spot on the bench for the senior side’s 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Champions League, and indeed their draw with Everton in the Premier League a few days later.

Thus, it’s clear that the centre back has a very bright future in the game, and having excelled at Under-18 and Under-23 level, surely the time is now for him to experience league football – and where better than under former Liverpool Under-18 chief Gerrard at Rangers.

Yes, the Gers have strengthened in the defensive ranks this summer with the arrival of Goldson and Nikola Katic, but with David Bates having left the club, Russell Martin returning to Norwich City, and Bruno Alves’ future far from certain, there is still room for further additions to really reinforce the ranks – Masterson’s arrival would do just that.

As such, with Gerrard seemingly linked with many Liverpool youngsters, it’s 19-year-old wonderkid Masterson who is the one he really ought to sign for Rangers this summer.
