St. Mirren have confirmed that Rangers-linked Vaclav Hladky has turned down a new contract at the club and will be leaving Paisley this summer.
The Gers have been linked with a new goalkeeper after both Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick were recently released, and Hladky was one they were looking at in particular – he was even said to be their top target.
Now, his current employers have confirmed that he will not be continuing his journey with them, leaving the door wide open for a move to Ibrox.
This is great news for the Gers. As it stands, Allan McGregor is the only senior goalkeeper available to Steven Gerrard and, at 38, you would suggest that the 54-time Scottish champions could do with a back-up option should he ever be unable to start – in the long-term, £360,000-valued Hladky – as per Transfermarkt – could become the main choice between the sticks himself.
Would you liked to have sign Hladky?
In fact he actually managed a better save percentage than McGregor in the previous term, leading with 72% to 71.7%. Signing him on a free transfer would be huge for Gerrard and Ross Wilson. In this current market, it is vital that the Gers are clever with their money, especially having already spent £3m on Ianis Hagi prior to that. This allows them to continue to look for other targets as they attempt to close the gap to Celtic at the top of the table.
