Why Rangers should avoid offering star man new deal at all costs

On the whole, it’s fair to say the Rangers fans propping up the bar in the Transfer Tavern have enjoyed their season back in the top flight of Scottish football.

Clearly, catching up with Celtic is going to be a long-term project at Ibrox and the fact their bitter rivals are likely to exert their dominance over the next few years will surely leave a bitter taste in the mouths of Gers up and down the country.

However, the fact Mark Warburton’s side have been able to move ahead of another rival in the shape of Aberdeen is a promising sign and not something to be sniffed at indeed.

Crucial to their campaign thus far has been the form of the seemingly evergreen Kenny Miller, whose experience has been vital in helping Rangers find their feet at times this term.

There’s little doubt the veteran forward has been one of Warburton’s most important players this season, with the 37-year-old’s contribution to the side going far deeper than merely his five goals so far.

So in many ways, there was little surprise amongst our Glaswegian locals following recent reports suggesting offering the ex-Scotland star a new deal was in the offing.

Still, would that really be a good idea?

It’s obvious that Rangers will be trailing their bitter rivals for a few years at least, so it’s important for a progressive young coach such as Warburton to embark on an exciting new dawn at Ibrox.

As tempting as it would be to keep Miller around, handing the central striking berth to an exciting marquee name (with Saido Berahino linked) may be the more expensive option, though would be a better move in trying to restore Rangers to the summit of the SPFL.

They need to make statements off the pitch as well as on it and keeping Kenny Miller really isn’t one.
