Celtic fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager to see who Brendan Rodgers will bring to the club now the transfer window is officially open.
It’s hard to improve on last season after the Hoops secured a historic domestic treble. They made it seven Scottish Premiership titles in a row after thumping rivals Rangers 5-0 at Celtic Park. Victories over Motherwell handed them both the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.
Despite their success on home soil, Rodgers’ side struggled immensely in Europe. After being knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, they were also sent packing in the Europa League by Zenit St Petersburg. Reinforcements are needed if they are to challenge next season.
The Hoops are expected to break their transfer record to make Odsonne Edouard’s loan move from PSG permanent. Adding a left-sided forward to the Celtic attack with Patrick Roberts returning to Manchester City would be a smart move. Rodgers should look to raid his former club Liverpool for their best young talent.
Undoubtedly, the hottest prospect on Merseyside is Welsh international – Ben Woodburn. Valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, he would be a terrific signing for the Scottish champions. The 18-year-old has failed to break into the first-team at Anfield due to their abundance of talent in attack. The Reds are expected to strengthen their forward line again, with Xherdan Shaqiri targeted, that would push Woodburn further down the pecking order.
A loan move would be the best possible solution. Woodburn would be playing regularly for the Hoops, giving him the game time he so desperately needs. He is excellent on the ball, a fantastic finisher and adds another dimension to the Celtic attack.
