Celtic supporters were extremely proud in the Transfer Tavern on Tuesday night after seeing their side narrowly lose out to German giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League, although the Bhoys’ 2-1 defeat did end their qualification hopes.
Brendan Rodgers’ men went into their clash with the Bundesliga champions having won one of their opening three group stage matches, which included a 3-0 defeat to Jupp Heynckes’ side at the Allianz Arena a fortnight ago. Yet the Scottish giants were significantly more competitive at Celtic Park on Tuesday, although goals from Kingsley Coman and Javi Martinez either side of a Callum McGregor equaliser was enough to seal Bayern’s passage into the last 16, at the same time ending Celtic’s Champions League dreams.
Nonetheless, Rodgers’ side produced a performance many of our resident Bhoys supporters were proud of on Tuesday night, although defender Dedryck Boyata won’t want to watch a replay of the visitors’ first goal given the part he had to play in it.
And the Celtic defender is the subject of a recent report in The Scottish Sun, as manager Rodgers has urged the former Manchester City man to pen a new deal at Celtic Park.
The 26-year-old made the move to Parkhead back in 2015 and has since gone on to play 73 times for the Bhoys, helping them to successive Scottish Premiership titles as well as the Scottish Cup back in May of this year.
And although he had a moment to forget against Bayern on Tuesday, the Belgium international has proven his worth to Rodgers in the last 12 months or so, and that has prompted the Celtic boss to urge him to sign a new deal at the club, given his current one is set to expire in 2019.
Rodgers said: ‘Dedryck would go into his final year next summer, but I’d love him to stay.
‘He is a player I rate highly and like all of the boys, he is seeing a really exciting period at Celtic. They want to be in this cycle and lots of them have signed up to be part of it.
‘There is nothing yet on Dedryck’s contract, but I’d like him to extend it, very much so.’
These comments are sure to intrigue our resident Celtic supporters, who will likely want to keep this squad intact given how dominant and impressive they have been in the last year or so.
But whether they can do that very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Dedryck Boyata made a costly error against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, but that shouldn’t detract from how important he has been for Celtic since his arrival back in 2015.
The 26-year-old has proven to be a hugely adept centre-back under Brendan Rodgers, and the Bhoys chief is hoping that he will extend his stay at Celtic Park, given that his contract expires in 2019.
Their performance on Tuesday against the German giants was the clearest indication yet that Rodgers is building something at Celtic, and given the players they have got and their likely Europa League campaign to follow, that is a journey many players would surely want to be a part of.
