It’s not been a comfortable few months for Celtic but they earned some temporary respite from the growing feeling of discontent with a 1-0 victory over Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon.
Indeed, with Rangers in the ascendancy and Celtic struggling for form prior to the weekend, speculation was beginning to mount regarding Brendan Rodgers’ future.
A narrow win over Aberdeen should quash any potential discussion over Rodgers’ future for the time being at least, but Thursday’s fixture away to FC Salzburg is exactly the type of test the Welshman will be judged on this season.
The Europa League test awaits and it will be interesting to see how Celtic lineup after Scott Sinclair’s match-winning impact on Saturday.
Sinclair (valued at £4.05 million by Transfermarkt) has struggled to break into the first-team so far this season but he was handed an opportunity to prove himself at Celtic Park when Odsonne Edouard was forced off the field with an injury after 43 minutes.
And the wing-wizard made sure to give Rodgers plenty to think about ahead of Thursday’s fixture with a genius moment of improvisation to clinch the points for Celtic with little under half an hour to play.
In the aftermath of proceedings, TT’s Ally Darlow delved into Twitter to assess the reaction of the Celtic supporters and he discovered plenty of fans heaping praise on Sinclair after his fine backheel.
After struggling for attacking inspiration in recent weeks, Sinclair’s strike was a timely reminder of his ability to think outside the box and produce moments of quality when others are devoid of inspiration, and it’s fair to say he deserves a starting berth on Thursday as a reward for his contribution on Saturday.
Sure, Sinclair was far from his best against Aberdeen but if Rodgers wants him to return to his best then he needs to help him rediscover his confidence, and rewarding him for his performance with a place in the starting lineup represents the perfect place to begin that process.
