Rangers supporters have been significantly more upbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team get back to winning ways in the Scottish Premiership with a 2-0 victory over Motherwell at Ibrox on Wednesday.
Graeme Murty’s men went into their clash with the Scottish League Cup runners-up off the back of defeats at the hands of St Johnstone and Kilmarnock, results which left them 14 points adrift of table-toppers Celtic on Christmas Day. Yet they cut that gap to 11 on Wednesday as goals from Danny Wilson and Alfredo Morales secured a 2-0 success over Stephen Robinson’s side, setting them up perfectly for their trip to Brendan Rodgers’ Bhoys on Saturday in the Old Firm derby at Celtic Park.
Consequently, there have been many buoyant Gers fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Record, which suggests that Norwich City defender Russell Martin is on the club’s wishlist ahead of the January window.
The 31-year-old made the move to Carrow Road permanently back in 2010 after enjoying a loan spell at the club the season before, and he has since played 308 games for the Norfolk-based outfit, including four seasons in the Premier League.
However, the Scotland international has struggled for regular football under new boss Daniel Farke this term with just seven Championship appearances to his name, and he has reportedly been told he can leave the club in January.
And recent reports suggest that Rangers are seeking to benefit from that next month by making a move for the centre-back, in a deal which could seriously bolster their backline heading into 2018.
Landlord’s verdict: Scotland international Russell Martin has played over 300 times for Norwich City since his permanent move there in 2010, 125 appearances of which have come at the top level of English football.
Yet with just seven Championship appearances this term, the 31-year-old’s time at Carrow Road seems to be nearing an end, and Rangers are one side thought to be targeting the centre-back ahead of the January window.
Manager Graeme Murty is clearly seeking to bolster his squad ahead of 2018, and a move for the vastly experienced Martin would certainly do just that.
