Rangers fans will surely feel a little disappointed with how flat their season has fallen considering their failure to reach a domestic cup final and the gap between them and Celtic still appears evident to see. Despite the way the campaign has gone, it must be remembered that it is only Steven Gerrard’s first job in management and he appears to have surprised a number of onlookers with work he has managed to produce at Ibrox.
But, it appears one of his own players has surprised him with his latest decision regarding his future in the game.
What’s the News?
Allan McGregor had confirmed his retirement from international football earlier in the week and Gerrard admitted he was surprised by the decision made by the Scotsman.
Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “I’m sure Alex (McLeish) is disappointed and his teammates because he is a top goalie. I was only aware of it in the last few days and I was a bit surprised, but obviously having spoken to Allan now I respect his decision and we move forward.”
McGregor’s decision to retire from the Scotland National Team did come as a surprise to many, considering he has been McLeish’s number one in recent matches after putting in a number of impressive performances for Rangers after returning to the club in the summer.
However, when you take into account that the ‘keeper is 37-years-old, it could come as good news to those that follow the Ibrox outfit.
The goalkeeper will be able to look after his body a little better now knowing that he does not have to make sure he is fit for international duty, which can help him to prolong his career with the Light Blues and remain an important figure for Gerrard’s side for as long as possible.
With Rangers starting to build a side that can compete for domestic honours, keeping McGregor in the team fit and healthy will only come as a boost to the Gers, whilst they will not have to worry about whether he will return to the side in top condition after an international break.
What is clearly Scotland’s loss will only be Rangers’ gain.
Rangers fans, what did you make of McGregor’s retirement? Are you happy as fans of the club? Or are you disappointed as Scotland supporters? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
