The Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club can mount a genuine title challenge in the SPFL next season with Gerrard at the helm.
The arrival of Steven Gerrard has installed a feeling of optimism into our resident Gers which has been absent in recent years, and they are desperately hoping their new manager can oversee a new era of success for the club. However, they appreciate that the club will also need to bring in a handful of new players this summer if they are to challenge Celtic for the title next season, and recent reports suggest they are preparing to do just that.
According to the Daily Record, Steven Gerrard is lining up a double swoop for two Premier League strikers this summer, namely Dominic Solanke and Jermaine Defoe. The report claims that Rangers will target the aforementioned pairing on loan deals, presumably due to the hefty price tags that both players would command.
Either way, the news will naturally be greeted with delight by the supporters, as Solanke possesses a level of raw potential which could enable the club to mount a title challenge next season. Defoe is clearly the more established of the two players, but the report heavily implies that he is happy on the south-coast and would prefer to remain with Bournemouth.
On the other hand, Solanke will be desperate for regular first-team football after enduring a frustrating campaign with Liverpool in which he only made 5 starts in the Premier League. The opportunity of moving to Ibrox and establishing himself as a first-team regular is surely one which he would jump at this summer, and if that proves to be the case then Gerrard must do everything he can to secure his services.
Solanke has struggled for form on his rare outings for Liverpool, but his prolific record at international youth level – which included 3 goals during the England U20’s World Cup victory in 2017 – suggests he is a huge talent simply waiting to be unearthed. The 20-year-old has demonstrated that he is powerful, quick and capable of holding the ball up effectively as well as running in behind, but his composure in-front of goal has been lacking thus far.
However, the manner in which he finally opened his Premier League account for Liverpool with a thumping strike against Brighton on the final day of the season suggested he possesses a genuine poachers instinct, so he should become a fantastic asset at Rangers if he eventually makes the switch.
Adding a player of Solanke’s quality and potential would be a step in the right direction for Gerrard on his mission to catch Celtic next season and, considering there is no risk in a loan deal, he would be foolish not to bring him to Glasgow in the summer.
