Steven Gerrard’s hands are tied as the Alfredo Morelos problem at Rangers worsens

What was your reaction when Alfredo Morelos was sent off against Celtic? Was it Anger? Frustration? Or simply what you expected? Far too often this season, Morelos has become the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons, and that’s undeniably going to lead to question marks surrounding the Columbian and his future – at least from sections of the fan base.

Let’s not forget, this is a player that is representing the playing squad, the fans and the club more broadly, and the reality is that at present, he’s letting all of those parties down. It’s no real surprise, in that case, that Steven Gerrard has run out of excuses for the Columbian’s antics.

However, it’s simply not a case of selling him and moving on, because from that point of view, the Gers’ hands are tied. Not only is he tied down to a long-term contract, but more to the point, the club are just so reliant on him. He’s scored 17 league goals so far this term, and he’s been involved in everything positive moving forward for the Gers.

When he doesn’t play, the club look like a shadow of themselves, and that poses a unique risk for Steven Gerrard. He can’t move on from the player, because it will take the club so long to find a replacement, but if he continues to rely on him, the club will continue to struggle when he has one of his ridiculous moments.

It’s got to leave you questioning, then, just where do Rangers go from here? It’s tough to see them just deciding to sell him, because what will that achieve? They’ll get a bit of money, sure, but they’ll have to spend just as much to bring in a top quality replacement – because Jermain Defoe isn’t up to that task every single week.

For that reason, Gerrard doesn’t have much choice but to hang on to him. Make no mistake, he’s a brilliant player, and you could argue that he’s won the Gers far more points than he’s cost them this season. And maybe, if Gerrard is able to coach the player and get rid of the poor aspects of his game, that could help to transform Rangers’ fortunes.

Honestly, it just looks like Rangers are in a tough spot. They’re going to lose regardless of what decision they make, and there’s simply no way around that. That said, maybe hanging on to him is best for business right now.
