Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been throwing praise at their on-loan goalkeeper, who made a hat-trick of penalty saves as he helped Aberdeen overcome Kilmarnock to reach the Scottish Cup semi-finals yesterday. The game finished 1-1 after extra-time, and with both sides needing a hero to step up, Freddie Woodman was there to deny Kilmarnock a place in the competition’s last four.
The shoot-out heroics from Woodman prompted excitement from Newcastle fans as they hope to one day see him as the Magpies’ first choice between the sticks. The road to the first will no doubt be a tough one for the youngster though, as Benitez looked to the transfer market in January to bring in Martin Dubravka after both Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow failed to live up to expectations in England’s top flight.
Woodman’s heroics last night will have no doubt gone unnoticed by other clubs, as the England U20 international will be highly sought given his impressive form since making the 250-mile journey north from Newcastle to Aberdeen on loan. Woodman has nailed down the starting spot at the Scottish Premier League club and will be hoping he can continue to add to his goalkeeping portfolio with more impressive displays like last night.
Here’s the Toon Army’s’ verdict on Woodman’s shoot-out brilliance:
Freddie Woodman saving penalties for fun! #nufc

Freddie Woodman should be either second choice, or loaned to a promotion chasing Championship team as a minimum next season. We shouldn't let him go like we did with Forster. #nufc

Adam Armstrong back doing what he does best, scoring goals. And now Freddie Woodman doing what he does best, saving penalties. Well he has saved penalties in Euro & World Cup finals for England to win. #NUFC the future looks bright!! https://t.co/l0EP1ye3a9

Clearly extremely talented and getting games under his belt. Maybe a full season on loan in championship first.
