Transfer Flashbacks: Pedro Caixinha

Transfer flashback:

On 11th March 2017 Rangers announced the appointment of Pedro Caixinha to put an end to weeks of uncertainty regarding the identity of Mark Warburton’s successor.

Warburton was dismissed around 4 weeks earlier on 10th February and Graeme Murty had resumed temporary control at the club prior to Caixinha’s arrival, winning 3 out of his 6 games in charge.

Following the lengthy wait for an official announcement, Caixinha’s arrival came as welcome relief to the Rangers supporters who had high hopes for the future under the Portuguese tactician.

It’s clear from the selection of tweets that most Rangers fans were pleased to welcome Caixinha to the club and were hoping for him to bring success back to Ibrox, but expectation failed to meet reality in the end.

Caixinha’s stint in Glasgow lasted just over 7 months as he was eventually dismissed by the club at the end of October 2017 despite losing just 2 league matches from 11 at the beginning of the 2017/18 season.

His dismissal instigated another period of discontent amongst the supporters who saw Murty take temporary charge once again, but this time his stint lasted until the end of the season when the club eventually appointed Steven Gerrard to take over.

Although Caixinha was not a complete disaster at Rangers, he failed to capture the imagination of the supporters with his style of play and he ultimately paid the price for failing to take the Gers up a level.

At the time of Caixinha’s appointment the enthusiasm was only natural following weeks of speculation with Murty at the helm, but in hindsight it appears the supporters were overly optimistic about his credentials to enjoy a successful career with the club.
