This article forms part of our Transfer Scenario feature, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at a recent transfer rumour and suggests what the potential consequences would be, should a deal be completed.
Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos never appears to be out of the headlines for a very long time. Stories have been made in the past about his on-field behaviour, whilst he has consistently earned plaudits for his ability to find the back of the net for the Light Blues and, seemingly, change his ways.
Indeed, that particular skill of being clinical has made him a wanted man and transfer rumours appear to have followed the Colombia international ever since he joined the Ibrox outfit.
Although the transfer window came to a close last month, that has not stopped such speculation as LA Galaxy (per the Scotsman) and Aston Villa (per Football Insider) are both said to be interested in signing the 23-year-old once January comes around.
Of course, should Steven Gerrard and Rangers look to cash in on their star player, there will be some potential consequences that the Glaswegian outfit will need to consider, both of the good and bad variety. Here are just a couple that the Bears will need to think about…
Goals could become a problem
As mentioned, one thing that the Colombia international does so well is to find the back of the net on a regular and consistent basis.
Since arriving at Rangers, Morelos has managed to score 61 goals (and provide his team-mates with 23 assists) in 108 games – a figure that many would expect to continue to improve over the next few months at the very least.
Indeed, the 23-year-old already has 13 to his name this season after featuring just 17 times across all competitions (Transfermarkt). To put that into context, only strike partner Jermain Defoe is anywhere near close to him with his nine so far.
So, should Rangers decide to cash in on Morelos, they would be risking an almost sure-fire way of scoring in the majority of their fixtures and would, perhaps, have to rely on players that have not been as consistent as the South American has throughout his time at Ibrox – something Gerrard may need to think twice about if the Bears are to challenge the likes of Celtic for domestic silverware.
Rangers & Gerrard get money to spend
On the flip side of considering what could be bad for Rangers if they were to sell Morelos, there is a positive consequence of moving the forward on.
According to the report by Football Insider, the Colombian’s signature could fetch Gerrard and the Light Blues a transfer figure north of £2om, which would then allow the Glaswegians to try and invest in their squad and find a potential replacement.
Indeed, it is, perhaps, a little hard to find a proven goalscorer at a good price in the modern-day transfer market, however it would mean that they would have the financial resources available to allow them to compete for big names and find an individual with the potential to replicate, if not better, the South American’s current contribution.
