Ibrox has been a much livelier place to be this season as opposed to last. Steven Gerrard has done a solid job at Rangers, but there is so much work still to be done. Last summer saw him move to bring in Allan McGregor from Hull City, and this summer he could be set to replace the 37-year-old with St Johnstone stopper Zander Clark.
McGregor was only ever going to be a stop-gap as, even for a goalkeeper, at the age of 37 he’s nearing the end of his career, and as Football Insider link the Gers with a move for 26-year-old Zander Clark it provides the Glasgow club with a chance to start building for the future. In this battle, we’ll compare Clark and McGregor, and hopefully see who would be a better fit between the sticks for Gerrard.
As previously mentioned, McGregor is currently 37-years-old and by the end of the 2019/20 season he will be 38, so his time in football is coming to an end. That doesn’t mean he has no value to Stevie G. At times this season the shot-stopper has been the difference in the tight games, but he is just as likely to lose his rag as one man at the other of the pitch, Alfredo Morelos.
For such an experienced professional, McGregor has a nasty hot-headedness about him and he’s been very lucky that his recent red card against Hibs was only his first of the season. When it comes down to pure goalkeeping ability he has it in him to shine, but silly moments where he lets himself down and the obvious ageing is going to start taking its toll on the 42-cap Scotland man.
TT GRADE: C
Steven Gerrard has got a number of deals lined up that may not provide Ibrox with the big name stars that it has been used to, but with players who can do a solid job on a long-term basis and stabilise them as the Glasgow club look to usurp their city rivals. Zander Clark is one of those names, and he’s one who, if the move goes how Gerrard envisions, will be the Rangers’ keeper for years to come.
Age is certainly on the net man’s side and with a number of impressive displays for St Johnstone this season, it looks like a move to Ibrox would be a reward for stepping up when it’s mattered this season. In 41 games for the club this season, Clark has kept 19 clean sheets, and that is no mean feat whilst plying his trade at St Johnstone, who ended the first phase of the Scottish Premier League season in 7th.
TT GRADE: A
This summer promises to be a massive one as Gerrard looks to fine-tune his squad ahead of what will be a tough second season at Ibrox. One position where he can’t afford to get it wrong is his man between the sticks, and Zander Clark has to be the man signed to step up for Stevie G as he’s shown far more reliability than the current Ibrox man Allan McGregor.
