Rangers ran out as 4-0 winners against St. Johnstone on Sunday afternoon, and Steven Gerrard’s side might just have one man to thank for that result being possible.
In truth, the Bears were hardly tested in Perth as they controlled much of the game and eventually made their dominance pay off as the gulf of class between the two sides finally shone through.
Goals from Alfredo Morelos, Connor Goldson and a quick-fire brace from Jermain Defoe in the second half of the league encounter at McDiarmid Park were enough to see the Light Blues retain second place in the Scottish Premiership standings.
However, St. Johnstone could have taken the lead in the first half if it were not for a superb save by Allan McGregor.
Having been a mainstay for Gers under Gerrard in his second spell for the club – keeping 32 clean sheets in 65 appearances for the Liverpool legend – he has continued to show why as the £675k-rated ace’s (Transfermarkt) concentration still appears to be at the highest of levels.
Although the 37-year-old (who has played for the League’s bottom outfit) was a spectator for much of the game, the shot-stopper was still alive and alert to keep former Rangers forward Michael O’Halloran at bay deep into the first half.
Rangers News noted the importance of McGregor’s save, stating that “the game would have had a much different complexion had that gone in” as they handed the experienced ‘keeper an eight out of ten.
The Glaswegians are believed to be preparing to open contract talks with McGregor about extending his stay with the club beyond the end of his present deal that expires at the end of the season (Football Insider) and with displays like that, it is hardly a surprise as to why Gerrard is keen to tie him down for longer.
