Rangers managed to put five past Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon in front of a raucous crowd at Ibrox, although one of their defensive stars should have been earning plaudits for his contribution in the game.
A brace from James Tavernier (by virtue of the penalty spot both times), Greg Stewart, Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defore put the sword to one of their Scottish Premiership rivals.
The victory also meant the Glaswegian outfit kept the pace with Old Firm rivals Celtic as they made the most of their slip up earlier in the day against Hibernian (BBC).
Steven Gerrard praised his side following their win, which is only natural, however he could have, perhaps, have made a positive remark regarding Borna Barisic – a player that he has been impressed with in recent weeks.
The manager revealed the Croatia international has been “outstanding” recently and believed the left-back would be able to go from strength-to-strength.
Indeed, it appears that assessment was correct as the £1.58m-rated international (Transfermarkt) as he put in another glowing performance in front of the Ibrox crowd on Saturday afternoon, which included an assist for Morelos’ goal.
Rangers News raved about his display, scoring him a seven as they were delighted with what they saw from him.
They wrote: “It looks as though the Croatian has finally found a bit of consistency in his form as he put in another decent shift. Spent long spells camped in Aberdeen’s half and his fantastic cross for Morelos set up the third goal. Long may it continue and, on this form, it is easy to see why he’s first-choice for Croatia.”
Ibrox Noise also waxed lyrical about the left-back, as they gave him an eight, stating: “For the second match running Rangers’ best defender and this time it was unequivocal on his own merits rather than the failings of others. Barisic defended very well, no one getting past him, and he finally starting getting advanced in terms of attacking – the crosses and corners are back at last, and his assist for Morelos’ superb header was borderline world class. Great performance.”
Indeed, with Jon Flanagan having been on the sidelines with an injury, Barisic certainly appears to have been making his case to play for Gerrard’s side on a consistent, regular basis with his recent performances and is certainly going from strength-to-strength with every display.
