Rangers’ scattergun transfer approach hasn’t necessarily hit the target in every case this season, but Steven Gerrard certainly hit the bulls-eye with Arfield.
It’s a tough one, isn’t it? While Rangers’ season under Gerrard has ended on a relatively low note, having lost out on the title to their close rivals, it was also brimming with endless memories from Europe and some domestic success, including two Old Firm victories. Admittedly, some players have been absolutely disastrous *cough* Umar Sadiq *cough* whilst others have been truly sensational. As we say, it really is one of “those”.
Now, onto the good stuff. Avoiding the obvious Morelos, Kent, McGregor, Tavernier etc. one individual who has impressed us this season is Scott Arfield.
Having arrived on a free transfer last summer, the former Premier League man has been truly magnificent for the Gers this season, if not a little anonymous – like the unseen milkman who delivers dairy goodness in the early hours of the morning.
What’s not to love about Arfield? An ex-Premier League player with a history of dragging teams forwards through his own valiant efforts – including promotion with Burnley and, of course, Premier League survival – he was exactly the kind of player the club needed to inspire their own comeback. And he has achieved that, to some extent.
The basic demand from any fan is for a player to give it their absolute all; blood, sweat and tears. They need to know that their players live and breathe the club as much as they do, that they share a level of passion and are united by struggle. And that is exactly what they have been given by the industrious Canadian. Unbridled commitment. Mix in the fact that he’s actually a pretty decent player and you’re in dreamland.
Although it all came a bit too late in the current season, the Rangers faithful will be encouraged by the fact that, in recent months, Gerrard has truly unlocked the potential of their star player by moving him into a more advanced role.
