If there’s one player who is going to be at the centre of a lot of media attention this summer in Scotland, it’s Alfredo Morelos.
The Colombian striker is off the back his best ever season in professional football and one of the best of any Rangers attacker in years as Morelos scored 28 goals and assisted 11 in all competitions for Steven Gerrard’s side this campaign, and after hitting such incredible numbers, interest is bound to come this summer.
This has been Morelos second season in Scotland, and after a campaign as incredible as the one the striker has just had, it looks like the 22-year-old attacker is already set for a move beyond the Scottish Premiership, and this summer needs to be all about making sure the attacker gets the move he needs.
Having signed for a reported fee of £1 million in 2017, Rangers stand in line to make a massive amount of profit on the striker if a team comes in for Morelos, and if a bid does come in for the former HJK attacker from a top-five league in Europe, the Colombian needs to do all he can to make the move.
Morelos’ future lies away from the Scottish Premiership after two number-defining seasons in Glasgow, and at 22, the striker will be a lot better off developing his game in a division that is not only more competitive than Scotland, but where European football can be guaranteed every season.
The forward has the ability to thrive in many of Europe’s top leagues and could do with a change of scenery after two years in Scotland. A move to Spain to a La Liga side, for instance, would be perfect for Morelos, who will be moving to a country where he is accustomed to the language and where his family can move to because of a Spanish-speaking environment and warm climate.
Letting go of their star striker will be a painful move to make, but for Morelos, the attacker needs to put his development first this summer, and his improvement as a player can come with a move away from Scotland this transfer window.
