Rangers have got a lot of business ahead of them in the summer window. The rate at which Steven Gerrard has been loaning players in and out is phenomenal, but when Greg Docherty returns to Ibrox it’ll be in Stevie G’s interest to keep him at the club. Shrewsbury has been a good place for the 22-year-old to develop, but it’s time he got his Ibrox chance.
The young Scottish midfielder has shone for the Shrews throughout the season at the New Meadow that he’s more than good enough to star for Rangers. At the age of just 22, it will probably be an eye opener being able to work directly under the tutelage of Steven Gerrard too, as the former Liverpool and England captain used to play the same role that the young Gers’ loanee does.
Sending Docherty to play in League One this season was a brilliant idea as it’s given the young midfielder the game time and experienced he was lacking, and now he’s surely ready to star in the middle of the park for the Bluenoses. Indeed, seven goals and eight assists (as per Transfermarkt) are pretty decent stats. No one’s expecting him to come in and play every game, but having him at Ibrox is surely better than loaning him yet again.
The current midfield options that Gerrard has at his disposal has seen him make a promising start to life in management. Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield, Steven Davis and Glen Kamara are all more than good enough, but the way that Docherty can bring even more goals and assists from his deeper midfield base is impressive and something that Gerrard should look to utilise throughout the 2019/20 season.
Making the step from League One to the Scottish Premier League won’t be easy for the young midfielder, though, playing football in Scotland stereotypically is a much more physical game and whether or not Docherty can hack that side of things is yet to be seen. However, it cannot hurt to try and Gerrard would be mad to let the 22-year-old leave the club on-loan or permanently in the coming months.
