What does the future hold for Kieran Tierney at Celtic?

What does the future hold for Kieran Tierney at Celtic?

There was a lot of speculation in the summer about key players leaving Celtic, but Moussa Dembele was the only high-profile departure in the end when he left the club on deadline day for Ligue 1 outfit Lyon.

Prior to the Frenchman’s exit, it had been Kieran Tierney who was touted for a move away from Celtic Park with Everton the rumoured destination (via Daily Mirror) as they searched for a long-term successor in the left-back position to Leighton Baines.

The Toffees, though, ended their pursuit of a new left-back with the signing of Lucas Digne and Tierney, of course, stayed a Celtic player, much to the delight of supporters.

The defender has been a revelation since making his debut back in 2015, and Brendan Rodgers has touted the 21-year-old to eventually succeed Scott Brown as Celtic captain.

Speaking to the Herald last year, Rodgers said: “He’s made for it [the captaincy], there’s no doubt about that. We’ve got some senior guys at the club I could give anyone the captain’s armband; Craig Gordon or Mikael Lustig, but if you’re talking for the future once Brown’s time is up, which won’t be for a few years yet, then he’s made for it.”

With the professionalism and maturity he so often shows on the pitch, Tierney is well on his way to becoming a future Celtic great and captain.

That being said, with the ability he possesses, the Scotland international also has many other paths he can go down.

He is a modern day full-back capable of being extremely effective in both halves of the pitch be it when he is crossing a dangerous ball into the box or putting in a decisive tackle, something his skipper believes to be one of his strongest traits.

“He’s as hard as nails,” Brown told UEFA’s official website. “He’d tackle his granny and he’d go into any situation and thrive just because of his attitude.”

Having already been targeted by Everton, with the way his development is going, there is no doubt other Premier League clubs will be interested in Tierney’s services in the future.

Arsenal, for example, could be looking for a left-back very soon with Nacho Monreal’s contract set to expire next summer.

And while he may be far from that level in this moment of time, his potential and playing style could be of interest to both Real Madrid and Barcelona with Marcelo and Jordi Alba ageing.

Tierney, though, on plenty of occasions, has spoken about his love for Celtic from since he was a boy (via BBC Sport), and has the sort of connection with the club that could see him stay for the long haul.

However, should he one day decide a challenge elsewhere is needed, then he will not be short of offers.
