Former Aston Villa and Rangers defender Alan Hutton has been discussing Celtic recently, and he believes that Jonny Hayes still has a lot to offer the club, following rumours that he will depart in the summer.
According the The Scottish Sun, the 32 year-old looks set to depart the Hoops when his contract runs out this summer. He has managed two goals and seven assists since joining the Hoops in 2017, per Transfermarkt.
Would you keep Hayes at the club?
Speaking to Football Insider about the player and him possibly leaving the club, Hutton said, “It’s a strange one. He’s got pace, every time that he came in he did well and he is versatile, he can be an attacking threat or when they were playing 3-5-2 he played that wing-back role very well.
“It does surprise me a little bit, I don’t know if there’s maybe more to the story than we know but maybe this is the reason they’re looking at other players, maybe they’re looking towards the future a bit.
“The likes of Jonny Hayes, these are the type of boys you can trust and rely on to maybe not play every game but when they do come in they give you 110 per cent and that’s what he’s done. Maybe there’s something on the cards, maybe he’s got a move ready and waiting that appeals to him more so we’ll see in the upcoming window.”
It is hard to disagree with Hutton, the player might lack in goal contributions, but he is an experienced head to have in the dressing room as he has played in the SPFL for most of his career, and as the former defender has highlighted he is not there to play every game but be there when called upon.
His tally of 30 goals and 70 assists in 207 appearances at Aberdeen, per Transfermarkt, highlights he knows what to do to succeed at this level, and even if this doesn’t mean he plays every game, he can provide advice to younger players as the club look to win 10 titles in a row next season.
His versatility is also a crucial thing to have in football squads in the modern game, as managers have to adapt more and more in games to different situations.
This emphasises that it is quite surprising to hear that he might leave the club but it is clearly seen by others how much Hayes can still bring to a squad despite his age, it may be worth giving him a one-year contract if the club can afford to and keep him in the club as they bid for their 10th title in a row.
