Celtic: Mikey Johnston determined to continue his recent good form

Celtic winger Mikey Johnston has voiced his determination to maintain the spell of good form that he has shown since returning from several weeks out injured.

The 20-year-old scored in the Hoops’ last two matches against Rennes and Ross County after being sidelined with a thigh injury and he has challenged himself to keep contributing towards goals throughout the season and learn from his team-mates.

Who is the better player, Mikey Johnston or Mohamed Elyounoussi

He told “I know what my role is as a player. I need to contribute goals and assists and do my defensive duties to help the team as well.

“We’ve got loads of good wingers at the club that I can learn from, and if I can take little bit of their game and add it in to mine, then great.”

Prior to last week, Johnston hadn’t featured for nearly three months due to injury. He could have been forgiven for taking time to get back up to speed but instead he has made an instant impact since returning to action.

He came on as a substitute in the wins over Rennes and Ross County and, despite playing just 41 minutes across the two matches, managed to score in both. [via TransferMarkt]

He now has five goals and four assists from 12 appearances this season and has played for 742 minutes in total, averaging a goal every 148.4 minutes and an assist every 185.5 minutes.

Having lost his place to Mohamed Elyounoussi through injury, Johnston has taken advantage of the Norwegian’s recent absence to stake his claim to be Neil Lennon’s first choice left winger.

Elyounoussi currently has seven goals and six assists to his name from 12 games across 962 minutes, with a goal every 137.43 minutes an assist every 160.33 minutes.

The Southampton loanee has the better return for both goals and assists, although Johnston is not far behind.

With Elyounoussi nearing a return to action (as per The Scotsman) and Johnston impressing of late, Lennon could soon face an interesting call for the left winger berth in his starting XI.

Some Celtic fans have called for Johnston to keep his place ahead of the Norwegian, and if the 20-year-old can build on his goals from the last few days, he has every chance of making the left winger slot his own.

It looks as if Lennon may have a pleasant selection headache with which to contend if the left-sided duo continue to impress.

Celtic fans, do you think Johnston should be the first choice on the left wing even after Elyounoussi returns? Join in the discussion by commenting below!
