Rangers have made some shocking transfers in the past that really have not provided the rewards the club would have initially hoped for!
All you have to do is look at the likes of Eduardo Herrera, Carlos Pena, Bruno Alves and Umar Sadiq just to see that point highlighted.
To be fair to Steven Gerrard, he has not done too badly when it comes down to his recruitment as he has largely got it right; there are some questionable choices but we shall not go into too much depth with those as he has actually been quite good at getting rid of them.
Since coming to Ibrox, the Scouser has told a number of players he does not see in his plans to pack their bags and has managed to get a number of them off the club’s wage bill.
As such, Rangers can surely feel they dodged a bullet in regards to missing out on one of their rumoured transfer targets back in 2017 as he would have likely felt Gerrard’s axe.
According to a report by Sky Sports, the Gers were believed to be interested in signing Motherwell’s Ben Heneghan.
The centre-half was expected to leave Fir Park that summer after the club had a disappointing campaign in the Scottish Premiership, leading to the intensified links surrounding his name.
He signed for Sheffield United that summer (a club that was not named in the report; go figure), however, he never played a part for Chris Wilder’s side and spent the whole of this year’s campaign with Blackpool on a season-long loan.
He may have been excellent in his time with Motherwell, however, with Gerrard acquiring Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson almost immediately following his arrival, it would not have been a surprise to see Heneghan be told to pack his bags after just one year if he joined the Ibrox outfit.
So, it would seem that this may have been a dodged bullet for everyone involved at Rangers.
