Will AC Milan be able to keep Gianluigi Donnarumma?
According to Calciomercato, AC Milan could face an exodus, with seven players potentially being sold to balance the books.
Gianluigi Donnarumma is arguably the most noteworthy player on the list provided, but he is joined by Suso, Franck Kessie, Krzysztof Piatek, Davide Calabria, Lucas Paqueta and Alessio Romagnoli.
What would happen if Donnarumma actually left? We explore the fallout of any potential deal for Milan and the player:
Using Pepe Reina
With the whole reason behind the possibility of Donnarumma’s departure being because of finances, it seems unlikely that Milan would splash out on a replacement.
Following that logic, the likelihood is that the club would either move for a far cheaper stopper to replace the 20-year-old, or turn to Pepe Reina.
The Spaniard’s only start this campaign came against Genoa, a game in which he made a mistake to let Lasse Schone’s free-kick go past him, gave away a penalty and then saved it to keep hold of the three points for Milan, as shown in the highlights video on the Serie A YouTube channel.
There has been a turbulent relationship with Donnarumma and many Milan fans, despite the fact that he is a product of the club’s academy and represented them 172 times at 20-years-old, as per Transfermarkt.
In 2017, they reduced him to tears with a banner that read: “Moral violence, 6 million per year and the signing of a parasite brother? Now get out, the patience is over!” as reported by The Telegraph at the time.
During the same year, he had fake money thrown into his goal while away with Italy at the U21 Euros, following reports that he could leave the San Siro, as reported by The Guardian.
There is certainly the possibility that they could conjure up another form of protest if he comes close to leaving the club again.
Paris Saint Germain on alert
Paris Saint Germain showed an interest in Donnarumma during the summer, according to The Daily Mail, with the indication being that they could be interested in making a move for him again.
The Ligue 1 champions already have Keylor Navas to fill the goalkeeping role, but the Parisians have shown that they are not afraid to have more than one high-quality player for each position, as indicated by the fact they brought Mauro Icardi in on loan despite already having Edinson Cavani.
