While the transfer window is always likely to throw up strange moves, the punters in the Transfer Tavern couldn’t quite believe they saw former Arsenal and Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna move over to Italy.
Obviously, a move to Serie A is nothing out of the ordinary, especially for a Premier League-winner previously linked with a move to one of the Milan giants. However, after leaving the Etihad last summer, the French international has moved to Serie A underdogs, Benevento!
The side who hit headlines for securing their first ever top league point against AC Milan after their goalkeeper scored in the last minute a few months ago have landed a major coup in bringing Sagna to Serie A and, speaking to Football Fan Cast, he’s revealed all on the move.
Upon leaving City, a move to Leicester City was touted for the Les Blues international and he has hinted offers DID come from these shores, as well as in other top leagues.
“ In the past few months, I have had several offers from clubs in the top leagues in England, France, Spain,
Turkey, the MLS and elsewhere in Italy”, he told Football FanCast.
”However, they were not the right moves for myself or my family. Going to Benevento is not a move I am making for financial reasons. I could have gone to many other clubs, many of whom made substantial offers to me.
”My career for the past decade has been at the very top level, what Benevento offers me is the opportunity to represent the underdog and to play for a club whose story is such a beautiful one.”
Rejecting lucrative offers elsewhere and moving to the ‘underdog’ as he describes them is a huge contrast to recent goings on in the Premier League, where Alexis Sanchez’s wage at Manchester United has attracted criticism. Speaking on the general matter of football becoming a business, Sagna has some heart-warming thoughts on the matter.
”In an era when football has become more of a business at many clubs than an actual sport, Benevento represents the heart and soul of what a football club should be about.”
”Passion, heart, hope, joy, love and a philosophy that is aligned to that of my own way of thinking in life.”
As you can imagine, it’s the kind of story to go down a storm amongst the punters in the Transfer Tavern.
