Antonio Conte has made his decision on Gabriel Barbosa’s future at Internazionale clear, as reported by Calciomercato.
The 23-year-old has been impressing while out on loan at Flamengo, but this hasn’t swayed the Inter manager, who has decided he doesn’t want to use him, leaving the Brazilian free to leave when his loan spell ends in January.
According to the report, Conte respects how well Gabigol has done in Brazil, but takes note of the fact he has failed for Inter in the past and sees him as a risk to the balance of the squad.
Barbosa has taken the Brazilian Serie A by storm this season, with his current record standing at an impressive 17 goals and 4 assists in 16 matches, as per Transfermarkt, while he has also managed 5 goals and 1 assist in 9 Copa Libertadores appearances.
However, since moving to Inter in 2016, he has only managed 10 appearances for the club, totalling 183 minutes, scoring 1 goal, which came in a 1-0 win over Bologna.
All of those came during the 2016/17 campaign, with loans to Benfica, Santos and then Flamengo following on from that spell.
It seems very harsh that Gabigol has been written off after a mere 183 minutes of football at Inter, especially when his record in Brazil this season is considered.
While he likely wouldn’t have been a starter, there was surely a chance that the 23-year-old could have been a useful player for Conte to use off the bench or in situations where Romelu Lukaku or other forwards are not available.
