Unsung Hero: Inter’s Diego Godin was effective before being forced off through injury

Internazionale’s loss against Juventus will have been a difficult one to take, with Gonzalo Higuain’s winner coming in the 80th minute.

One player who could arguably be feeling even more hard done by than most is Diego Godin, as he put in a brilliant performance before being forced off through injury in the 54th minute to be replaced by Alessandro Bastoni (as per WhoScored), meaning he was forced to watch the winner from the sideline.

However, Inter fans can take some encouragement from how effective the Uruguay international was during his time on the pitch, while they are still only one point behind Juventus in the league.

Godin completed four tackles, two clearances and three interceptions throughout the game, with his number of tackles and interceptions being the highest of any player on the pitch, despite the 33-year-old being forced off early.

The Uruguayan was level with Danilo D’Ambrosio as Inter’s third-highest rated player on WhoScored, with 6.8, behind Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku.

If there was one improvement that could be made, it would be his contribution on the ball, as he attempted 19 passes, completing 14, which gave him a pass success rate of 74%, with Lukaku being the only outfield Inter player to get lower.

Despite this, Godin has given another indication of how effective he can be defensively for Antonio Conte’s side, so Inter will be hoping the injury that forced him off is not a serious one so that he can return to action after the international break.
