Internazionale will move to sign Jan Vertonghen on a free transfer when his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expires next summer, according to The Guardian.
Despite Spurs ruling out a January move, Inter are reportedly keen to eventually bring Vertonghen to the club, with Antonio Conte looking to improve his options in defence.
So what would happen if Vertonghen decides to join Inter? We explore the potential consequences of that scenario here:
Spurs centre-back shortage
Toby Alderweireld’s contract also comes to an end in the summer of 2020, as per Transfermarkt, which means Spurs could realistically be losing both of the Belgians.
This would leave Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth as their only senior centre-backs, with Eric Dier a possible option to have filling in there, while Japhet Tanganga could potentially be used as a backup after making his debut against Colchester United.
Even if all of these are used, Spurs will still need to sign at least one more centre-back if they are to avoid a shortage in that position.
Alessandro Bastoni loan
Alessandro Bastoni has spent the last two seasons on loan, heading to Atalanta and Parma, but has stayed with Inter this season, though he may be best served making another temporary move next summer if Vertonghen joins.
In Serie A, he has made three starts and one substitute appearance so far this season, as per WhoScored, averaging 1.5 tackles, 1 interception and 2.3 clearances per game.
With Milan Skriniar, Diego Godin and Stefan de Vrij as competition, the 20-year-old already has a lot of competition for places in the back three, so Vertonghen joining would make it even harder for him to get time on the pitch.
Competition at left-wing-back
With it being mentioned that Bastoni would struggle to get into the back three, there can be an argument made that even Vertonghen would find it tough given the pedigree of centre-backs at Conte’s disposal.
Therefore, the Belgian may need to show some of his versatility to get into the team and this could mean competing for a place at left-wing-back, as well as being an option in the central three.
He has shown that he can fulfil this role in the past, with an example being his performance in a Champions League win against Borussia Dortmund last season, in which he got a goal and assist.
