Internazionale striker Romelu Lukaku has revealed his digestive system “stopped working”, as reported by ESPN.
When he arrived at Inter he was sent to a nutritionist for a detailed report, which included the decomposition of his body waste.
The report detailed that something was wrong, so he was put on a specific diet of mainly fish, sweet potatoes, shiitake pasta, and cooked and raw vegetables.
This saw a transformation for the Belgium international, as he lost 10 pounds in 12 days.
The Belgian was criticised for his weight while at Manchester United, with an example coming from a Gary Neville tweet when he left the club: “He admitted he was overweight! He is over 100kg! He’s a Manchester United player! He will score goals and do well at Inter Milan but unprofessionalism is contagious!”
Lukaku’s struggles arguably showed on the pitch, as in 2017/18, Lukaku started 33 Premier League games, coming off the bench once, scoring 16 goals and assisting seven, as per WhoScored.
Last season, he managed just 22 starts and 10 substitute appearances, scoring 12 goals and getting no assists throughout the league campaign.
With the issue now seemingly sorted, the early signs are that this has helped the 26-year-old, as he has scored in each of Inter’s two league games this season, including the winner against Cagliari.
Knowing this makes the criticism he faced while he was a Man United player seem very unjust, as if anything, the club should have done more to spot and deal with the issue, so it is good to see that he is now over the problem.
The 26-year-old has made a good start to life at Inter, so it will be interesting to see if he is able to keep this going.
