Manchester United winger Tahith Chong is allegedly a target for Juventus, according to reports.
The Daily Mail suggests that with Chong’s contract expiring at the end of the season, the Old Lady may well tempt the youngster with a move to Turin.
The eight-time back-t0-back Scudetto winners are allegedly joined by many other European clubs in their interest for the Dutchman, with the Mail comparing this situation to Paul Pogba’s before he left for Juve in 2012.
Given that Tahith Chong is probably much more likely to get first-team football at Manchester United, this would probably be a slightly surprising deal.
Chong has made four senior appearances for United this season. He appeared twice from the bench in the league, while also starting one game in the EFL Cup and the Europa League.
With Chong turning 20 in December, his next move is a big one for him – and things are a lot different to when Pogba joined Juve back in 2012.
When Pogba left in 2012, Sir Alex Ferguson was still at the helm at Manchester United, and Juventus were a long way away from the supergiants they are now. In fact, they had just come off the back of their first legitimate league win since Marcello Lippi won it in 2003.
With United not winning a league title since 2013, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has gone back to youth with his current United team – as shown by him fielding some of the youngest teams in the Premier League this season (Transfermarkt), and the focus is very much about getting the club back on track. Juve, on the other hand, are now a well-oiled machine who are demanding success now. Having an extremely experienced team with players on huge wages such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Miralem Pjanic, Leonardo Bonucci, Alex Sandro and Gonzalo Higuain all comes at a big price; a price worth paying if they can get their hands on the ever-elusive Champions League trophy.
Given this situation, Chong – who is about to turn 20 and is not getting into United’s first team – faces a much smaller chance of appearing for Juve, given how much better their squad is, so you wonder how much Chong will want the move if he is desperate for first-team football.
Realistically, the chances are much higher of Chong getting regular football with Manchester United than at Juventus at the moment, looking at the current respective makeups of the two squads.
Therefore, if Chong wants out to get more minutes under his belt, then Juve may not be the right option for him. If the reports are true and there are other teams in Europe going after him, then that might be the best solution for the Dutch winger should he seek a move.
