Juventus are lining up a shock move for World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe, according to Italian reports.
According to Tuttosport, the Italian giants are prepared to pay a huge whack for the PSG star, with the report stating they will go after the Frenchman in a deal that could be worth up to £335m in total.
The 20-year-old – who recently became the youngest player ever to reach 15 goals in the Champions League – was bought by PSG for £166m (Sky Sports).
After Juventus paid astronomical fees for both Cristiano Ronaldo (£105.3m) and Matthijs de Ligt (£76.95m), per Transfermarkt, it could be a struggle for Juve to pay pretty much double the combined amount of those two on one player.
According to a report from Calciomercato from about a month ago (via Sports Mole), after the high spending on Ronaldo and De Ligt, as well as other additions such as Adrien Rabiot and Aaron Ramsey, the club are now in a position where £264.87m needs to be raised in order to balance the books.
Now, finding out whether either of these reports are completely true is pretty much impossible. However, the two are at complete opposite ends of the spectrum.
If both are true, then it would be a ridiculous deal for the Turin-based side to pursue, and similarly to Cristiano Ronaldo, they might have to hope that the player would earn the club some huge money through the marketing he would bring. According to this article for the Daily Mail, the club have earned £51m in extra revenue, from things such as the club growing in fans by 40m, extra shirt sales, and the increase in popularity of their social media channels.
It is hard to predict whether such a transfer can happen, especially as it is unlikely to happen until at least the summer. He is likely to be wanted as a long-term Ronaldo successor, as you can’t imagine the Portuguese star being willing to stand aside as being the main man until he is really starting to slow down.
The move might also depend on whether Juve can get closer to the desired Champions League trophy. With eight Serie A titles on the bounce, the club are desperate to win the infamous Champions League, as they haven’t done it since 1996. If Juve win the Champions League this season, they may feel less inclined to splash such money on the forward, as they would have reached their goal.
